Academy (Day 9) - Today’s session was a physical work day back at the Simple Survival (S Pod) build in the “Testing Site”.
1 group was devoted to the first of 2 “bird cage” dome structure design and build which is mainly using bent re-bar tied together with metal wire.. tomorrow we are going to finish it off with metal lathe over the top also tied with metal wiring.
The other teams were continuing the tire courses, of which there will be 5 total from the ground up before the bond beam can be assembled.
During the tire pounding the thermal wrap is set about 4 feet out away from the tires to prepare for the first layer of vapor barrier (6 mil plastic) which is set on top and then draped over (shingled) down the back side. It was important to remember that the thermal wrap needed to be tiered 2 inches down from one another as there are 2 layers. One never should have the layers flush with on another at the top to prevent thermal breakdown.
Then a constant stream of buckets, digging, and back filling was necessary to separate and support the thermal wrap from the tire courses.
